FAQ
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
TCM developed in China over several thousand years and its theory asserts that processes of the human body are interrelated and in constant interaction with the environment. Signs of disharmony in the body help a practitioner understand, treat and prevent illnesses and disease.
What is Acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles into ‘acupuncture points’ on the body in order to treat disease or ‘disharmony’ patterns.
Disease is a loss of balance between yin and yang energies. This disharmony is not only treated with acupuncture needles but also heat (moxa), cupping or gua sha so as to normalize the free flow of qi ‘vital energy’, blood and body fluids throughout the body. The aim is to restore health, balance and well-being.
What does it feel like?
Patients find that treatments are relaxing and involve little or no discomfort. Occasionally one may feel a slight pinch/prick that quickly disappears.
Can I benefit even if I am relatively healthy?
Acupuncture patients range in age from children to seniors. Some seek treatment as an alternative to or as an enhancement of Western medicine, while others seek treatment for a chronic condition. TCM is not only used for treating ailments as they arise, but also in preventing disease. Many individuals find acupuncture a great way to maintain healthy and balanced lives. Furthermore, re-balancing before and/or after each season is highly recommended and helps to reduce the stress of climatic changes which also affect the body.
